Originally 8 feet (2 meters) wide, mobile homes now are available in models up to 28 feet (9 meters) wide. The most common and economical unit is the single-wide mobile home, which is typically 16 feet (5 meters) wide and 60 to 75 feet (18–23 meters) long. It provides up to 966 square feet (90 sq meters) of living space at an average price of about $20,000. An expansible unit, which averages $21,900 in price, includes additions that telescope inside the home during transport and are placed in position at the homesite. Each of these sections adds 60 to 100 square feet (6–9 sq meters) to the basic room.
A double-wide mobile home, which typically has 1,440 square feet (130 sq meters) of living space, consists of two 12-foot- (4-meter-) wide single units built separately and joined horizontally at the site to form one living unit 24 feet (7 meters) wide and 50 to 70 feet (15.2–21 meters) long. Because of the additional living space provided, sales of double-wide mobile homes have risen considerably over those of the single-wide units. The cost of a double-wide unit averages about $36,900.
To conform to the building codes of some localities in which mobile homes are installed, modular homes that are essentially double-wide units permanently mounted on a foundation are produced. There are some triple-wide units that are available, but they are not as popular.
